Kara Clark, assistant at a law firm, and Hannah Ryan-Humphrey, who does freelance art installation work, are new college graduates who met as first-year roommates. “I love how you described what you were wearing before,” Ms. Clark told Ms. Ryan-Humphrey. “Oh, yeah, when I’m wearing these shorts I look like a middle-school techie for a middle-school play,” said Ms. Ryan-Humphrey, who was wearing black cutoffs, a loose shirt and beaten-up Chelsea boots.
She got the shorts as a hand-me-down, but in a “semi-insulting way,” she said. “These don’t fit me anymore because I lost my baby fat,” Ms. Ryan-Humphrey’s friend told her. “I like them, but I think about it every time I wear them.
