BIG TINY author Dee Williams will be bringing us her #FridayReads each week! Today: MOUNTAINS BEYOND MOUNTAINS by Tracy Kidder:
I had to fly back to Kansas City last week, and borrowed an “airplane book” from a friend at work. She handed me Tracy Kidder’s Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, A Man Who Would Cure the World (Random House). I started it on the plane and then effectively used it to ignore my family through the first day of my visit. It wasn’t my fault; Kidder pulled me in and wouldn’t let me go, until I found myself wanting to drop everything to carry medicine into a small village in Peru.
BIG TINY author Dee Williams will be bringing us her #FridayReads each week! Today: Chris Guillebeau’s $100 STARTUP:
My business partner recently loaned me Chris Gillebeaugh’s $100 Startup (Crown Publishing). This may be because she’s tired of quoting it to me, or launching into long hypotheticals about “well, I’ll tell you what Chris Gillebeaugh would probably say about that kind of business venture.” I’m a dozen pages into it; I LOVE IT and I can’t wait to slip a quote into our next meeting.
'Not only was my mother (Shirley Jackson) prolific as a writer, she was also an artist. We have found more than eight hundred of her Thurberesque cartoons, watercolors and paintings, which we are also considering publishing. In fact, Shirley did a number of cartoons with references to The New Yorker, usually her impressions of Stanley’s life when he was off at the New Yorker offices, leaving the rest of us in snowy Vermont.'
Shirley’s cartoons are wonderful. She always depicts herself this way - hair out in every direction!
Lovely finished copies of THE BIG TINY by Dee Williams are in!!!

BIG TINY author Dee Williams will be bringing us her #FridayReads each week! Today: Peter Menzel’s MATERIAL WORLD:
I haven’t kept very many books on hand, but I couldn’t bear to give away Peter Menzel’s Material World (Sierra Club Books). It includes photos of families and all their worldly possessions sitting out in front of their house (if they have a house), so the reader gets this voyeuristic snap-shot of how a Mongolian family lives compared to that of a family in Guatemala, Serbia, the United States or dozens of other countries. It’s a pretty humbling comparison to hold in your hands and heart.
